PianoArtist Jacob Ertl, a leader in advancing CommunityArts

When Jacob Ertl, a winner in the 2002 PianoArts competition, was appointed to the piano faculty of Nazareth College, he brought to his position the highest level of artistry in performance and teaching, plus a deep passion for community programs.

As a PianoArts fellow Jacob had honed his skills in CommunityArts through collaborating with Milwaukee musicians, studying with specialists in speaking about music and programs for diverse audiences.

For several years, Jacob gave popular Milwaukee neighborhood concerts and taught as a fellow in area schools. Milwaukee teacher Laurel Poytinger said that her 6th grade students looked up to “Jacob like a rock star.”

Today, many public schools have been forced to cut funding for the arts. The future of classical music depends more than ever on musicians like Jacob Ertl.

As a fellow, he developed an enthusiastic commitment to CommunityArts. As a a professional, Dr. Ertl is a leader in arts advocacy as his students prepare to become teaching artists in their communities.

In May, Milwaukee will welcome another class of brilliant young artists as contestants in the North American Piano Competition. Among the ten competitors, the jury will select fellows for training to perform and teach in Milwaukee’s CommunityArts.
