2017 Festival Concert Artist and Competition Jury Head

Named “Ambassador for Arts and Education” by the Shanghai International Arts Festival, Jie Chen distinguished herself in Milwaukee in the 2003 PianoArts competition (first place prize) with her superior musicianship and talent for bringing peoples together through music. She went on to win eleven prestigious international prizes. While traveling around the world, she returned to Milwaukee to perform for a diversity of audiences, give master classes, and inspire youth to study music.

On June 16, Ms. Chen will perform again in Milwaukee and serve as jury head for the 2017 Wisconsin Youth Piano Competition. Included in her program, Classics from the East and West, will be Franz Schubert’s Sonata in G major, D. 894 and her own piano transcriptions of Chinese classics. Internationally known for her performances of western music, she has developed a keen interest in Chinese music. Her debut album, Chinese Piano Favourites was released to critical acclaim on the Naxos label. Her second album under Marco Polo label, “The Yellow River/ Butterfly Lovers” won her the Best Album of the Year award by the Asian Hi-Fi Society.

Distinguished also as an educator, Ms. Chen is the founder and director of the Music Department at the University of Shanghai Science and Technology (USST).
